Brunswick, ME
The fifth Androscoggin Hand Powered Regatta was held on Sunday, August
20, 2006 at the Water St. Boat Ramp, Brunswick on the tidal portion of the
Androscoggin River with 90 paddlers competing in three events, according to
Race Director, Alice Bean Andrenyak.
Sponsored by Maine Guide Supply, Maine Canoe & Kayak Racing Organization, and Brooks Feed & Farm of Brunswick, this event featured the State of Maine Flatwater Championship Marathon race of 15.5 miles, a 4.0 mile Fun Race, and a 1.2 mile War Canoe Sprint. The money raised from this fund raising event will support youth paddling development such as the Bath Schools Kayak Club.

This was the first run on the proposed bid course for the 2008 United States Canoe Association National Marathon Championships.
At 9:30 am, a four mile FUN Race for all types of canoes and kayaks started for children, families, and adults that want to race but use recreational boats.

At 12:30pm, the War Canoe sprints were held. Four fiberglass 30’ war canoes from Brewer, ME were brought to the event by boat builder Mike Maybury and each were filled with 12 paddlers. The Maine Canoe & Kayak Racing Organization team finished the 1.2 mile sprint course in 11:08, The Community Rascals team finished in 12:02, the United Women’s team finished in 12:23, and the Bath Area Schools Kayak Team finished in 14:02. The purpose of the event was to introduce all people to the joys of paddling a war canoe and focus on the Androscoggin River’s cleaned state which is so different from its condition through the mid 1980’s.
Next year’s event will be held on Sunday, August 19, 2007. FMI: 207 729-6333
